Dental implants are a good option for many people. Dental implants provide permanent tooth replacement and are often used in conjunction with other types of dental structures such as dental bridges. Below are some of the most frequently asked questions about dental implants.

Are dental implants permanent?

Yes, dental implants offer a permanent solution for missing or damaged teeth. Dental implants use small posts that are implanted directly into the jawbone. The bone grows around the implant securing it in place forever. Dental implants are often used to help secure dental bridges into place when important teeth are missing.

Is anyone a good candidate for dental implants?

Most people will fare very well with dental implants. Those who smoke or have had tooth and gum disease may not be good candidates for dental implants. In general those with healthy gums will do the best with dental implants. The success rate is the highest of all types of dental procedures. Consult with your dentist to learn if dental implants will be right for you.

How are dental implants put in?

Dental implants are anchored into the jaw. The cosmetic dentist first drills a small hole in the proper area of the jaw at the site of the missing tooth. A small screw or post is placed into the hole and a temporary cover is placed over it. After several months the screw post should be securely in place and the gum tissue should be reshaped around the temporary tooth. Once secure the dentist will replace the temporary cover with a permanent crown to complete the dental work. The tooth is now permanently installed.

Are dental implants expensive?

Dental implants are often considered a cosmetic dentistry procedure and for this reason they may not be covered under your dental insurance plan. Sometimes the dental implants are part of tooth restoration and thus are considered essential. Check with your dental insurance provider to determine whether the implants will be covered. Most dentists offer convenient payment plans to assist patients in paying for dental expenses.
