Invisalign® Braces - General Cosmetic Dentistry and Orthodontic Option Information
Invisalign® aligners are a relatively new system for straightening teeth that uses a clear material to gradually realign the teeth. A series of mouth guard style devices realign the teeth by moving them into new positions, progressively over time. The devices are worn for about two weeks each and then switched out with different ones. Each device moves the teeth incrementally toward the desired alignment position.
Unlike traditional metal, or porcelain braces, Invisalign® uses an almost invisible, clear material to accomplish straightening of the teeth. This makes them less noticeable to others, and avoids many of the difficulties of traditional braces. The mouth guard style aligners are removable as well, and make cleaning teeth much easier. Maintaining good oral health, including flossing of teeth is simpler with these braces.
With Invisalign® there are no retainers, and the need to tighten, or realign the braces has been eliminated also. These aligners do not irritate the mouth, or gums, and are more comfortable overall then other types of braces. The amount of time that will be needed in the dentist’s office is reduced too, and this means fewer office visits. This makes them ideal for adults because they are easier to manage, and maintain with an adult lifestyle.
The care and maintenance of metal, or porcelain braces can be difficult, and time consuming for the wearer. Cleaning and flossing of the teeth while wearing traditional braces can be uncomfortable, and intricate. But unlike traditional braces, Invisalign® oral hygiene is simplified by the removable design of the aligners. The aligners can be removed during eating, and cleaning so maintenance is quicker and easier.
Aligners used with the Invisalign® system are constructed of medical grade polyurethane resins, and are customized for each patient. By utilizing molds, and computer technology, aligners are constructed to apply force to a limited number of teeth over time. This allows the aligner to move selected teeth into the correct and desired positions. The Invisalign® system for straightening teeth has now being used to effectively realign the teeth of over a million patients worldwide.
