The Impact of a Beautiful Smile

A survey taken by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry several years ago shows that most people think a great smile is important, but half feel their own smile needs some help.

One mistake I see people make often is going to their family or local dentist down the street for smile makeover treatment. In reality, only a small percentage of dentists have sufficient training to create a beautiful smile.

To create a beautiful smile makeover, a dentist needs to have obtained significant training and experience. One problem consumers have is finding this type of dentist, because cosmetic dentistry is not a legally separate, Board Certified specialty. So anyone can call him or herself a cosmetic dentist just by putting this on a business card or website.

Those who are interested in becoming a true cosmetic dentist will pursue additional training after dental school. And I am not talking about some weekend course. To obtain this type of expertise a dentist must have years of training, such as that offered at The Center of Aesthetic Restorative Dentistry, where I have been on the teaching faculty since 2005. There, dentists learn the skills necessary to create smiles, developing special bonding techniques, color manipulation, lip and smile design, while taking into consideration the overall facial features.

Smile Makeover - The Procedure

The technique I use is called Global Diagnosing (GD). I look at the whole face, not just the teeth. For example, if a person has a very gummy smile and he or she wants to "improve my smile," and his or her dentist doesn't have a way to determine if this is caused by too much gum, too much lip mobility or too much maxilla, I can help. Each of these issues should be addressed completely differently. If your dentist doesn't know the difference, and you suffer from a gummy smile, you might end up with some great looking veneers below a large visible gum line - which actually makes things worse.

We prevent this by first starting with an initial consultation where I listen to your concerns and what you want to accomplish. We then do our cosmetic workup appointment where a number of specific measurements are recorded and a series of photographs of the face and mouth are taken. Multiple study models are made so I can have your mouth in my hand when I diagnose your condition and formulate the best treatment options. This is time consuming, but it is the part I enjoy the most. Figuring out how to specifically approach each patient's particular needs and fulfilling his or her personal desires are the most challenging and intriguing parts for me.

While no two patients are the same, at the treatment consult appointment I can show you photos of prior patients that I have treated who are similar to you. It is training and experience that tells me which treatments need to be considered. I just want to take the necessary time with you at this appointment for you to understand the treatment options available.

I also work regularly with several area plastic surgeons if there are benefits they can bring for us to consider. So if you want a complete smile makeover call my Plano office at 972-985-0005 and let's have a talk.
