What are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are small titanium posts, which are set in the jaw to serve as artificial roots for dental restorations, including crowns and fixed dentures. This restorative dental treatment provides a comfortable, durable, and effective solution to tooth loss. Because dental implants are rooted in the jaw, they tend to provide more strength than other treatments such as dental bridges. Dental implants can be used to replace a single tooth, or several missing teeth. During your visit to Dr. Bosher's Plano practice, he can determine if dental implants are a viable treatment option for you.
Cutting-Edge Implant Dentistry
With more than 30 years of experience as a cosmetic and restorative dentist, Dr. Bosher has dedicated himself to seeking out the most comprehensive, effective, and convenient treatment techniques. He has taken the time to make himself an expert on dental implants and implant placement, traveling throughout the U.S. with oral surgeon Dr. Steve Sherry to learn about the latest treatment options. This consistent study has afforded Dr. Bosher the ability to provide outstanding dental implant treatment, along with his role as a lecturer at The Center for Aesthetic Restorative Dentistry (CARD). Among the treatments he offers include:
"Teeth in a Day"
With the Nobel Biocare All-on-4 procedure, more commonly referred to as "Teeth in a Day," or immediate function implants, Dr. Bosher is able to place both implants and their restorations during one dental appointment. This procedure is significantly less invasive than traditional implant placement, and provides aesthetically pleasing, functional results. At an initial appointment, Dr. Bosher will examine the mouth and take impressions using CADENT iTero™ technology to devise an adequate treatment plan. During a second appointment, which is when the All-on-4 procedure is performed, implants are strategically placed in four locations in the mouth, providing a sturdy foundation for the placement of full restorations. Some benefits of "Teeth in a Day," include:
- Often eliminates need for bone grafting
- Less expensive than other implant placement procedures
- Shorter healing time
- Natural looking and long-lasting results
- Patients do not experience the discomfort or embarrassment of missing teeth in-between dental appointments
Dr. Bosher can determine your candidacy for immediate function dental implants during a comprehensive consultation. Although not all patients are able to receive this revolutionary treatment, Dr. Bosher is skilled in the use of several different implant dentistry methods, and can prescribe the best treatment option for you.
Custom Abutments
Abutments can be thought of as the connecting piece between the implant post and the synthetic restoration. Unlike many other dentists who use pre-made abutments, Dr. Bosher remains committed to high-quality, personalized care, and uses only custom-made abutments throughout each dental procedure. This ensures optimal fit for each individual patient, increases functionality, and provides aesthetically pleasing results.
Advanced Bonding
Dr. Bosher is one of only four dentists in the Dallas area who is able to successfully bond porcelain restorations directly to dental abutments. This is a significant advancement in implant dentistry because it completely eliminates the risk posed by the number one cause of implant failure - excess cement left behind on an abutment. This superior technique does away with the use of dental cements, making Dr. Bosher's implant placement procedures safer and more effective than alternative options.
The Implant Dentistry Process
To begin the implant dentistry process, Dr. Bosher will examine your teeth and jaw bone to determine if you are a good candidate for dental implants. In general, you need a sufficient amount of healthy bone to support the implant. He will take digital x-rays and digital impressions of your mouth using the CADENT iTero™ unit and create a template which will be used as a guide for the precise placement of the implant. During the next appointment, the implant will be placed in the jaw bone during a simple surgical procedure.
Once the implant is placed, it will take three to six months for the bone to heal and fuse to the titanium post, forming a strong foundation for the replacement tooth. Dr. Bosher will ensure that your jaw has healed sufficiently, and then attach the replacement crown, bridge, or denture to the implant. With proper care, your implant can last a lifetime; however, the crown, bridge, or denture may wear and need to be replaced over time.
